1986ish mental notes to Jin
Once you were asked why people write you these admiring letters. As I recall I replied with the obvious answer you were loved and admired. Some how that answer was not satisfying. Did you not feel you earned or deserved this response? I now realize many years latter that this was an experience you have often, unlike the rest of us. The universe has crowned you as a leader or teacher or sprit guide or guiding light some one who attracts other to gather around. You may feel saddled with this responsibility since you didn’t ask for it, but it is 100 % yours. What you do with this power is also 100% yours. The American Indians have a chant they sing as they dance around the fire “beauty above----- beauty below----- beauty on my left---- beauty on my Right---- I am on the Golden Path” As we live our lives we receive feed back from the universe letting us know if we are indeed on the golden path. Accept and own these responses. Rejoice and be renewed from the positive ones. Observe and learn from the negative ones.

Along time ago I had a ceramic show titled “From the Center Out” numerous bowls and plates showing a subtle but telltale finger mark spiraling out from the source. There is a kinetic response people have to these objects that goes beyond cognitive. I respond to the symbol as well as the material that captures it. It is telling me I am on the golden path. It has been years since I have made these objects and yet on occasion someone comments and reminds me of a spiral bowel they treasure. In that moment in time I too feel content and complete.

When the contentment settles away I am left with questions.
Do we make what we are or, are we what we make? What initiates the artist in us to create? Why do we struggle to stay on purpose? Where do we go when we have lost our way? Who can you even talk to about these questions?
